Adopt-a-Hydrant Program
About the Program
Fire hydrants are an important resource that firefighters rely on in every neighborhood – including yours. In the winter, it is common for fire hydrants to be covered with snow. The Adopt-A-Hydrant community program enables Coralville residents and businesses to:
- take ownership of a fire hydrant in their neighborhood
- keep the hydrant clear of snow, and
- make the hydrant accessible and visible
How It Works
- Adopt a hydrant. When a resident signs up, the Fire Department assigns them their neighborhood fire hydrant, if it has not been adopted. Each participant receives a certificate showing the location of their adopted hydrant.
- Keep it clear. After each snowfall, the resident clears a 3' x 3' area around the adopted hydrant, with an access path 3’ wide to the hydrant from the street, so that it is visible and accessible.
- Enter to win. After each snow accumulation of 2" or more, the adopted fire hydrant is inspected by the Coralville Fire Department no sooner than 12 hours after the snowfall ends. If the assigned hydrant has been cleared, the hydrant “owner” is entered into a community gift card drawing held at the end of the winter. The department digs out snow-covered hydrants as needed.
