Community Outreach & Engagement

The Coralville Brownfields Program works to engage with local citizens through outreach events and occasional information in the City's e-newsletter, The Beat, and quarterly magazine, Coralville Connection.

Community Events

The Coralville Brownfields team participates in area community events, including the annual "Seize the Carp" family event hosted by Take A Kid Outdoors - Iowa each summer.  The team aims to educate the community about Coralville’s accomplishments with environmental assessments and cleanups. Kids and adults participate in an oil spill experiment, learn how land can be contaminated by oil operations or pipelines carrying petroleum or natural gases, and create sand art. 

Youth Engagement


Each spring, the City leads environmental work days with local junior high students. City staff and leaders work with the students in Coralville parks and teach them about the benefits of trees, native plants, and environmental cleanup. Often, these environmental work days are hosted in Brownfield zones; students receive fact sheets about Coralville Brownfields and the EPA Brownfields Program, learn what brownfield sites mean, and discover how potential brownfield sites could be identified.

Presentations 


The City gives presentations about the Coralville Brownfields Program for the University of Iowa’s Urban and Regional Planning graduate students and faculty to provide information about the City’s vision for the neighborhood and brownfields sites. These presentations are done in pursuit of youth education on the Historic Highway 6 Gateway Neighborhood (Brownfield Zone 6A).
